Flowering cherry trees are to be planted in Downend to celebrate the Queen's ninetieth birthday, it was announced this week.

Nine Tai haku white-flowered Japanese ornamental cherry trees - one for each decade of the Queen's life - have been donated to Downend and Bromley Heath in Bloom by the housebuilder Cotswold Homes which is constructing nine new homes on its site next to Badminton Road Methodist Church.

"The name of the development, Princess Way, was chosen to celebrate the first birthday of Princess Charlotte in May and the trees for the Queen are to be planted in Downend's Kind George V park, so you could say this is a right Royal sponsorship by Cotswold Homes," comments Chris Boulton, chairman of Downend and Bromley Heath in Bloom.

Welcoming Cotswold Homes' support for Downend and Bromley Heath in Bloom, Chris said: 'All our members are volunteers and our activities are reliant on sponsorship of this kind, as well as grants and donations. By providing trees and shrubs, floral displays in the summer and bulbs and flowers in winter, we hope local people will feel proud of their area and that this will enhance the sense of community.'

Prices of those still available start at £330,000. The exclusively private homes range from two-and-a-half storey properties to four-bedroom detached homes. Unveiled for the first time is a brand new design for an innovative three-bedroom detached home with a garage.

Designed by Cotswold Homes' in-house team, all the properties feature flexible accommodation which can be adapted to the needs of today's modern households.
